CD GAME COPY PROTECTIONS

OverSized/OverBurn CD's

A protection method which can be commonly seen these days is to over-burn a CD.  In most cases a 74mins/650MB or a 80Mins/700MB CD is used and is pressed to hold slightly more than than the stated limit e.g. 76mins/670MB or 82mins/720MB. This means that your CDR Software will try to match the size of the original CD to the size of the blank.  It will then realize that it cannot burn it because the original CD is bigger than the blank one.

Detection Of The Protection

This particular protection can be detected by using a copying program. If you try to burn from the original to either CDR or HDD, the program will usually notify you to say the original is more than 74mins/650MB or 80Mins/700MB. You can also use Windows Explorer to find the total size of the original CD.  To do this simply right click your CD ROM drive letter then click properties and it will tell you the amount of space which is on the CD.

You can use one of the many protection detection tools from our Game Copy Protection Identifying Tools page to identify whether the protection is being used on your game.

Burning/Backup Solution

There are several different methods you can use to successfully burn/backup your game, as follows:

Most, if not all of today's CD writers 'unofficially support over-burning'.  This means that the that they can use the extra space at the end of a blank CD to burn more data. Another simple way around this is to buy blank CD media that supports slightly more than the standard 74min/650MB.  These larger CDs can hold up to 700MB+ which is usually easily enough to copy the original CD.  You may find that the CD is pressed to hold much more than 80Mins/700MB e.g. 84mins-88mins.  The simplest way around this is to buy the larger 80min/700MB CD media.  This is not the same as over-burning, it is simply burning the original CD to CDR that is slightly bigger.

You can use CloneCD to successfully burn the game. Use ClonyXXL to scan the game, it will then tell you what protection is being used on the game (OverSize/OverBurn) and the correct settings to use in CloneCD to successfully backup the game. You can also use Alcoholer protection scanner and Alcohol 120% burning software. Use Alcoholer to scan the game, it will then tell you what protection is being used on the game (OverSize/OverBurn) and the correct settings to use in Alcohol 120% to successfully backup the game. BlindWrite can also successfully burn a game with this protection on it. You can also use Daemon Tools to emulate the game and the protection. *Remember, if you experience problems with burning the game at high speeds, (2 speed +) (both the read and write process), then burn the game at lower speeds such as 2 speed and under (both read and write process). A lot of the time burning the game at slow speeds will solve problems of the install not working, or the burner not bypassing the CD's protection.
